A rotating compost tumbler is a barrel-shaped container with a framework to allow the bin to be rotated or tumbled by hand. This tumbling aerates the decomposing organic matter causing more rapid development of compost for your garden.

The compost container is filled with the same ingredients as the usual heap, left for a few days to allow the composting to start, and then turned every 2 to 4 days.

The turning action of the tumbler ensures that composting bacteria are never short of oxygen, so they keep working at full speed.

Constant mixing also ensures that all the ingredients are well composted and that moisture content remains optimal throughout materials.

With uniform moisture content and good oxygenation the debris heats well as decomposing takes place. This can be very useful when weed seeds or diseased material are being composted. Another added benefit of a tumbler is they are pest proof.

Compost tumbler bins tend to heat up very well, and after three to four weeks will produce an immature compost in which the original ingredients will be unrecognizable.

This material may be added directly on the garden, or stored under cover to continue its reduction into a more refined product, allowing you to start another tumbler full of material to be composted.

To function properly, this type composting bin needs to be filled all at once, adding material a little at a time is not a good option. The materials need the bulk of a whole load to heat and aid in the process the decaying.

Manufacturers stated time of producing a finished product is under optimum situation and your results may be some what longer. These bins do require effort in turning but whether it is any more difficult than manually turning a ground based compost pile is questionable.
