Using this approach you can create a beautiful focal point for your yard porch or garden.
There are no rules on what maybe be used as plants or pots. Many times one will see some of the invasive plants such as Bamboo used in big containers to create screening. They are contained and will grow nicely without worry of spreading throughout the surrounding area.
Spring time bulbs may be planted in pots for early color. Summer blooming annuals or even long growing perennials are used regularly as potted accents.
There are a number of plants that are grown for their colorful foliage. Coleus and Caladiums are just a couple that also do quite nicely in containers.
Limited soil area in containers require regular watering and feeding through the season. Smaller pots are especially bad for over drying so they need to be shaded and perhaps sprinkled even more often.
Sprinklers on timers work great to make watering easy in the summer. You will have to check and possibly reposition your water source as things grow and spread.
Some plants lend themselves better to containers better than others. Succulents are a great container plant. ever bearing strawberries also are a nice addition to a container garden. There are some wonderful terra cotta pots designed for strawberries or succulents, these have openings for plants on the sides. These pots have one major problem which is poor water flow causing dry areas. This can be cured by simply inserting a piece of PVC pipe of 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inch diameter with holes drilled to allow water to flow into the center of the pot from top to bottom. To water the plants simple fill the pipe and let the water drain from the pipe into all areas of the pot. Plants may be fed in the same manner.
Bigger pots or containers are a better choice. Sometimes you may want something different. I have seen large oblong stock tanks that have been painted and used for growing larger items such as shrubs, larger groupings of ornamental grasses, bamboo and small trees. These are ideally placed on bricks or blocks with drainage holes drilled in the bottoms. Once these large containers have been positioned they will not be moved due to their size and weight.
Rolling frames are a lifesaver when moving larger pots. Sometimes a pot will need to be repositioned during the summer season. By using the frames with wheels you can easly move even the heaviest potted plant.
Containers do not have to be the usual ceramic pot, they can be any container that is of the right size for the plants you are growing. Wash tubs, painted metal garbage cans, or large colorful plastic bins, stock tanks and even large willow baskets can be turned into containers for your pleasure. All these containers need is several good sized holes drilled into their bottoms and they will be turned into the perfect container for your prized plants.
